Just a quick idea. I use the /zombiespawn custom command and started thinking if there could be an automated gamemode varient of this. Zombies (the blocks) would spawn every round and after a certain amount of rounds have passed, the level would switch. Also, to make it more challenging, since lava has different states, the zombies could have different rage levels and could have a certain chance to break through blocks they are ajacent to. Then adding configurable round numbers and times along with zombie settings, could create a whole new gamemode.
