Switching Server 2008 to Slackware Linux

I have compiled and installed Mono on VMWare with Slackware installed before I make any major changes to the real server, but I am not sure of everything I need to run MCD on Linux.
Once I sort it out, I really need to get the server switched back over to Linux. I've been using Server 2008 for a few years due to easy integration with the rest of the MS network, but I really miss the real server capabilities of Linux. Windows is a joke.
I would appreciate some help. It's been years since I've used Linux (console only - you won't find me using x-windows) so I am a bit rusty even though I used it for 15-years. =)
